Understanding Delineator Posts

Friday, December 7, 2012 By: admin

What exactly are delineators posts?  They are similar to traffic cones except they are skinny and tall making them easier to be seen by cars.  Delineators are used to ‘channelize’ or direct traffic into a certain zone, or to keep it out of a certain zone in the case of a road construction site.

There are multiple brands of delineator posts, and depending on what style you want, you may have to commit to the brand that produces that style.  There are T Top Delineators which have a handle at the top.  There are also Ringtop Delineators which also have a handle, but it’s more of a rectangular handle.  Then there are standard Open Top Delineators which don’t have a handle so they are just flat or open at the top.

Another choice is the color of the post, sometimes they are orange, yellow or white.  You can also choose the size of the post as well as the base.  More details to come in a later post.

The typical sizes for delineator posts are 18″, 28″, 36″, 39″ and 42″.  This is simply the sizes that one of the more popular manufacturers has, there are definitely more out there than just that, it will just take some looking.  So, go find your delineators.

They could also be used as a warning that borders a construction project, so that cars know not to go too far over.  The truth is, delineator posts can be used however you need them, just make sure you research all the options before buying the delineators.

Delineator posts are meant to be impact resistant, but how resistant they are depends on the brand.  I am not going to go into brands in this post, but some can take impacts up to 60 MPH+ and still be okay.  Delineator posts can come with bases, with stakes that go into the ground or pavement (though pre-made holes are necessary to stick delineators into pavement or a hard surface.
