Reflective Sheeting Types

Thursday, September 26, 2013 By: admin

reflective sheetingThere are three different common types of reflective sheeting, and we will help you understand the differences in this post.  For those who don’t know, reflective sheeting is the orange/white stripes commonly seen on traffic barricades, traffic drums and sometimes on barriers.  Delineators usually have white stripes of reflective tape on them.

They are designed to make the product easier to be seen during the day and night.  Headlights or sunlight reflect off the tape to make the product more visible.  Now the most basic and least reflective version (but in many instances, it will do) is the Engineer Grade option.  It is also the least expensive.  The next step up in reflectivity is Hi Intensity, some states require this grade on certain roads so do your research before purchasing, especially if you are using your products on a state road!

The most reflective and expensive option is Diamond Grade and in some cases this is required for state roads at certain speeds.  But it does depend on the state.  This grade will ensure the cars will see the products.

Our website www.trans-supply.com sells reflective tape as well as traffic barricades, barricade lights, traffic cones and more.  Click on the following link to see our reflective tape options:  https://www.trans-supply.com/c-90-tape-and-paint.aspx

What is Reflective Tape?

reflective sheetingReflective tape is usually used in the traffic safety industry to make the products easier to be seen during the day and night.  The reflective collars as they can be called, are usually at the top of the product and can be seen on traffic cones, traffic barricades and more.

I would also like to point out there is reflective sheeting like what is pictured to the left, where it is an orange and white stripe and this is typically seen on a barricade.  Now a straight orange or straight white colored reflective collar is something you will see on traffic cones or delineators.

There are also different grades: Engineer grade is the most basic but works for most applications.  Hi Intensity sheeting is one step above, will reflect more and costs more.  Diamond grade has the highest amount of reflective and will cost the most.

Reflective Tape

reflective tape, reflective sheeting, EG sheeting, HI sheeting, DG sheeting, EG reflective tape, DG reflective tapeMany people may not know what reflective tape is exactly, and that is what this post is for.  Reflective tape is used in many different applications, but I am most familiar with how it is used in the construction industry.  It can be found on traffic cones, reflective safety vests, and more.

The idea is that light reflects off the tape and makes it easier for pedestrians to see whatever the tape is on.  Traffic barrels on the side of the highway, traffic cones, traffic barricades, these all commonly have reflective tape.  Remember that there is also different ‘grades’ of reflective tape, such as HI intensity, Diamond Grade, and Engineer Grade.
